A trapezoidal roof profile has a ribbed trapezoidal-shape pattern across the panel. This means, it is a quadrilateral (or a four-sided shape – see Figure 1) that has just a single pair of parallel sides. Sometimes, trapezoidal roofs are mistakenly referred to as corrugated. This is a misnomer as the corrugated profile has a repeating wavy pattern across its surface.Trapezoidal rib roofs are popular with producers because the shape makes them very material-efficient (a high strength-to weight ratio). This makes for a very cost-effective profile. The shadows of the trapezoidal shapes offer clean lines whether installed vertically, diagonally, or horizontally. They also possess good structural characteristics and can carry design loads well (e.g. for snow and wind uplift). However, it is not considered as premium a profile as standing seam due to its attachment method.
The International Roofing Expo (IRE) recently concluded in Nashville, TN. Now that the busy din of the show has subsided, it is a perfect chance to reflect on the show’s success. What did those who actually went think of the show?
A corrugated panel has a repeating wavy or rippled pattern across its design. It was the first mass-produced metal panel design in the United States. These panels can be used for roofing, siding, decking, and flooring. Corrugated panels are connected by overlapping the sheets, and then securing them in place with exposed fasteners.

The coming together of S-5! and S-5! Manufacturing is a tale steeped in history. When Rob Haddock and Harry Carner joined forces, the two created a partnership that now designs and manufactures the safest engineered products and has become the most trusted name in the metal construction industry. Here is Part 1 of our 3 Part history of S-5! Manufacturing.
It’s time! IRE – the International Roofing Expo has started in Nashville, TN. It officially runs February 11-13 in Music City Center. The exhibit hall in the Center is located in downtown Nashville – incredible roofing products and within walking distance to restaurants and local music venues. What could be better?

Photovoltaics (PV) is the process of converting light into electricity. PV technology converts sunlight (otherwise known as solar radiation) into direct current electricity. This process uses semiconductors, (the most common semiconductor material being crystalline silicon), so when the sun hits the PV, the electrons are released and form an electric current. Photovoltaic technology is commonly attached to a panel; and these solar panels are connected to one another and mounted onto a frame. This PV assembly is called a module and you can wire these modules together into an array. Rays of sunlight (photons) are absorbed by the solar panels. This power then gets converted into Alternating Current (AC) to be used in the house - or sold back to the centralized city grid.

Upon reading the Solar Power World article Metal Roofs are No Problem for Solar Installations, my reaction was, "Well, I suppose that is true—if (and only if) it is done 'the right way.'" There are so many materials, profiles, gauges, metallurgies and corrosion behaviors to consider; not to mention effective waterproofing methods, sealant chemistries, thermal cycling characteristics, weathering behaviors, strength of materials, structural engineering principals and relevant test methods. It is anything but a simple science!
