Galvanized vs Galvalume®

Posted by Kimberly Reichert on Jul 31, 2019 3:42:51 PM

What is Galvanized Steel?

Carbon steel is inherently susceptible to corrosion, which means it must be protected by some other metallic coating that is less corrosive. Carbon steel sheet is called “galvanized” when coated with a thin layer of pure zinc.

This coating provides two types of corrosion protection for the steel: “barrier protection” (sealing the surface from air and water) and “sacrificial protection” or “galvanic” protection—especially at scratches and cut edges.

This is an electrolytic process whereby the base metal is protected, but at the expense of the coating. The zinc “sacrifices” itself to protect the underlying layer of steel.

What is COR-TEN® (aka Corten, CorTen)?

Posted by Kimberly Reichert on May 23, 2019 11:32:46 AM

COR-TEN® is a special steel alloy that has a weathered, rusty-orange look. The material, also referred to as corten or CorTen, was developed to eliminate the need for painting the metal. Cor-Ten forms a stable rust-like appearance after being exposed several years to weather.

U.S. Steel owns the trademark on Cor-Ten. This steel alloy is encouraged to rust – and form a dark brown oxidation. This rust forms a protective coating over the surface that slows further corrosion.

What is Non-Penetrating Rooftop Mounting?

Posted by Kimberly Reichert on Feb 6, 2019 9:16:26 AM

Non-penetrating rooftop mounting refers to the ability to mechanically attach a clamp to a standing seam roof by gripping the seam in such a way that there is no penetration to the panel material. The best method for standing seam clamp attachment is via round-point setscrews

Using cup-point setscrews is ill-advised as such a screw point cuts through the paint and protective coating of standing seam panels, causing corrosion and voiding warranties.

In the metal roofing construction industry, mounting ancillary items is often a convenient and necessary aspect of desired performance. Obviously, the best way to maintain the integrity of a metal roof is to allow it to function only as a roof. But various rooftop utilities such as, HVAC, piping, walkways, vents, satellite dishes, snow retention, solar arrays, signage, fall protection, lightning protection, etc. all serve critical purposes and must attach to the roof.

Cost Savings Best Practices for Solar Mounting on Standing Seam Metal Roofs

Posted by Dustin Haddock on Aug 24, 2017 1:24:58 PM

Best design and installation practices when using seam clamps to structurally attach PV systems to standing seam metal roofs

Standing seam metal roofing (SSMR) is the most convenient of any roof type for mounting PV modules, either crystalline or thin-film. The seams of SSMR are beam-like elements that not only add stiffness and flexural strength to the roof panels, but also provide expedient attachment points for a PV system. Joining PV modules to this roof type can be done with or without continuous mounting rails using aluminum seam clamps.

Seam Clamps and Mechanical Compression

These clamps anchor to the roof seam by pinching it within the clamp body with round point set-screws that are in no way invasive to the roof. The setscrew forces the metal of the standing seam into a recess in the opposing clamp wall, permanently deforming it in order to establish a mechanical interlock. The clamp body is machined with threaded holes to facilitate anchorage of PV modules or racking components to the clamp.
